We’ve always had our suspicions about Ken, but now Barbie has come out—as a big supporter of marriage equality. The world’s most famous doll was pictured on the official Barbie Style Instagram wearing a “Love Wins” t-shirt along with a doll of L.A. fashion blogger Aimee Song.
“Proud to wear this “Love Wins” shirt with @songofstyle!” the caption reads. “Did you know that her exclusive t-shirts benefit different causes and non-profits? Such an inspiring initiative and fabulous few days I have spent with Aimee, she’s a doll! ?”
Song reposted the image, writing “Me and @BarbieStyle supporting equal rights because #LOVEWINS. Or as some of you have speculated, maybe we’re secretly dating”
The shirt is by Two Songs, Aimee’s clothing line with her sister, Dani Song. Half of proceeds from the tee go to the Trevor Project.
While this is Barbie’s first official foray into LGBT rights, an Australian artist designed several tableaus featuring Barbie in a same-sex marriage to encourage Australians to vote yes in the national marriage equality survey. This summer Mattel released a new line of diverse Ken dolls, and a few of them wouldn’t look out of place in a Pride parade.
Mattel unveiled the first out Barbie last year—dedicated to soccer superstar Abby Wambach—but that doll was custom-made and not for sale.
