Brooklyn BreYanna Stevenson was found dead in Oklahoma City after police answered call about a disturbance early Monday morning. Her death marks the 26th known murder of a transgender person to date this year.
Stevenson was discovered in a motel room and while police are investigating, no arrests have been made and authorities have no information about possible motives. Oklahoma City Police Spokesman, MSgt. Gary Knight is encouraging anyone with information to call the department’s homicide tip line.
Stephenson’s family has started a GoFundMe campaign to help with funeral costs.
“My daughter, Brooklyn BreYanna, was senselessly murdered,” her mother, Vivian Gaffney Stevenson, writes. “I can tell from the outpouring of love that I have been receiving via Facebook, Instant Messenger, phone calls and texts, that Brooklyn was loved by many and will truly be missed by all of you.”
This has been the deadliest year on record for the transgender community, with at least 26 reported fatalities, almost all of whom were trans woman of color.
